The same wild and wacky Russians that demolished a Motorola ZN5 are showing the same courtesy to Nokia's 5800 XpressMusic. The so-called Crash Test involves putting Nokia's first Comes With Music-enabled handset through a litany of horrible scenes, including a stay in the local freezer, a fall from grace, a ride in the washing machine, a dip in a freshly brewed beer and, of course, a crushing blow from a vehicle. The preview video is hosted up in the read link, and the full results of how it fared are promised in the near future. Let's just say we're betting the farm it doesn't handle unlimited downloads, calls nor texts very well (read: at all) after this hellish experience.

Nokia's 5800 XpressMusic (or the Tube, as we prefer to say) has been on sale in certain corners of the globe for a few weeks now, but the touchscreen-heavy handset has just now made itself to US soil. Sadly, it lacks the support necessary for US 3G data, but those who simply cannot wait another day can hop a flight to O'Hare (or Midway, if you please) and snap up one of the Euro versions at the Chicago flagship store. 'Course, you'll get the US warranty and all, and you'll only be asked to hand over $349.99 to take one home. As of now, only the blue variant is in stock, and the NYC store is still waiting for shipment.

We're always down with new shades of old mobiles, and we're particularly find of new ones that bring along something extra. Nokia has just expanded its Supernova range with a Graphite and Passionate Purple Supernova 7610, 7510, 7310 and 7210. Each of the newcomers also brings along "enhanced services" that enable users to "share their images and video with friends through Ovi Share, as well as keep up to date with friends via Nokia Maps and instant messaging with Windows Live Messenger." There's no mention of pricing, so we'll go out a limb and assume they'll remain the same as the colors already available.

Combining huge screens with usable keyboards in a pocketable package is the challenge phone manufacturers are eternally doomed to try to solve, leading to an endless stream of (mostly comical) patent applications for ridiculous form factors that will never see the light of day. That's where we think -- well, we hope -- Nokia's latest app comes into play, combining a portrait-oriented QWERTY keyboard with a wide display that somehow swivels behind the body of the phone when you only need a little bit of screen real estate. Looks cool on paper, but realistically, we think this thing would be the most unwieldy Frankenstein of a handset since the MPx were it ever to be produced. Tilt-slide on the N97 looks fine, guys. Seriously.

This folks, is a classic case of "chicken before the egg." Reportedly, Nokia's director of product and technology marketing Sari Stahlberg was quoted as saying that "when the technology reaches mass adoption we would consider putting DAB radios into our phones," but rather than supporting it now and assisting the technology in becoming adopted en masse, it's fine to just wait things out. He continued with: ""The more the technology is adopted across Europe and other territories, the more chance it's got of being included." Translation? "We'll gladly pull the trigger once it's safe, but don't count on us to increase DAB visibility in the mobile space."

A tradeshow to call its own, Nokia World kicks off this week in Barcelona -- and while it's expected to mostly be a way for developers to get out of their windowless offices for a couple minutes and connect with like-minded folks, a countdown timer has appeared on Nokia's European and Middle Eastern / African sites that suggests something bigger is afoot. New handsets, accessories, or initiatives? We're hoping for the first choice there -- because you know, Nokia, we haven't seen any Nseries devices running S60 5.0 yet. Hint, hint.

Every so often, Nokia will pop out a brick-like beast of a clamshell smartphone with a full QWERTY keyboard -- a black sheep in Espoo's lineup in every sense of the word. These so-called Communicators even had their own custom Symbian-based operating system, Series 80, until the E90 came around and brought 'em in line with the rest of the S60 crowd. Of course, S60 just took a big leap to the world of touch today, and that means the E90's starting to fall a bit behind -- so what's next? Nokia dropped a little teaser during its webcast today in the form of a stylized touch-based concept bearing strong family ties to the E90 and its ancestors, suggesting S60 5th Edition won't spell doom for the form factor. If it materializes, history suggests it won't be a mainstream device -- but if the real thing can look as good as this render, who knows?

RIM is dominating in the business space. Nokia needs to do something to begin to get their money's worth from their Intellisync acquisition. The BlackBerry Connect service was never as robust as users would like. It allowed basic functionality but not at the same as a BlackBerry device. Nokia thinks they can do a better job with their own syncing server and that enterprise customers will find this a compelling story to support Nokia devices.

Last week Mobile today announced that two new devices, the E71 and E66, will not be supporting the BlackBerry Connect software. BlackBerry Connect allows non-BlackBerry devices to interact with the BlackBerry Enterprise Server, allowing an Enterprise to only deploy one system, the BlackBerry Enterprise Server, to connect all their devices to the corporate email system. With this announcement, Nokia is stating that they are distancing themselves from RIM and making a push back into the business phone market.

This split means that business customer's IT departments will be forced to choose one platform or the other, or in some cases, both. Actually this split is not surprising. In 2005, Nokia acquired Intellisync for $430M USD. Intellisync provides a syncing platform that allows non-BlackBerry devices to sync to email, including Novell GroupWise, Lotus Notes, and Microsoft Exchange.

Here is the quote in the Mobile story from Nokia:

Nokia UK MD Simon Ainslie told Mobile: ‘RIM are a competitor and have done a reasonable job in a space that is traditionally ours, so it’s no great surprise that we see this as an opportunity to give consumers a proper choice on what email solution they want.

‘Our approach is to make email a mass-market proposition for everybody, not just for the corporate boardroom group of individuals where BlackBerry has established itself.’

This quote and move my Nokia makes it clear that Nokia believes they have chance to gain some market share in the Enterprise space.

I spoke with Paul DePond, CEO of Notify Technologies, a company that provides a syncing solution for Nokia, BlackBerry devices, and most of the device on the market to Novell GroupWise, Microsoft Exchange, Lotus Notes, and many other email platforms.

Mr. DePond has been in the industry for more than 20 years and commented the following:

DePond: This isn't that big of deal since this has been a long time in coming. Most organizations are already deploying multiple servers to support RIM and Nokia devices.

BlissBlog: Why wouldn't Nokia just continue to support this, covering their bases by having their phones connect to their own servers and to RIM.

Let's not forget, Nokia has a lot more devices out there than RIM. This is a move by Nokia to draw the battle lines for the enterprise customer.

If you remmeber the most disputed closing of Nokia Plant in Germany, the news is that Germany wanted $6.2 million in research subsidies back from Nokia, and in addition to the "tens of millions" that the company has already relinquished , it'll be coughing up another €1.3 million ($2.04 million) to hopefully close the door on the matter.

Said payment will be addressed to North Rhine-Westphalia, which was quite angry after the handset maker decided to hack 2,300 jobs from Germany and relocate operations to Romania for "lower labor costs." The sum here is in addition to the €20 million "Growth for Bochum"

The flagship handset in Nokia's Supernova Range, the Nokia 7610 Supernova sports a 3.2 megapixel camera with autofocus and dual LED flash, capable of capturing VGA resolution video clips at up to 15 frames per second. As well as having an FM radio and multimedia player, the 7610 comes with a 2.5mm AV connector and TV output capability, so it is quite a capable media phone.

Despite the strong multimedia capabilities, the 7610 Supernova is primarily a fashion phone. A combination of mirrored surfaces and interchangeable covers mean that you can keep the 7610 looking fresh, and you can also customise the handset's key illumination and wallpaper to match. In the past, we've tended to see these features with 3G phones, but the Nokia 7610 is not a 3G device, although it does support EDGE data which is OK as long as your mobile network actually uses it. The display is a 2″ 240 x 320 pixel panel in 16 million colours, which is perhaps a little smaller than we would like to see. Talktime is pretty decent at up to 5.4 hours with a maximum of 12 days standby time. Overall, the 7610 Supernova measures 98 x 48 x 15mm and weighs 99 grams which is pretty typical for this type of device.
