So, we figure one of two things has happened here: either the Samsung Access has been a solid seller for AT&T, leading the carrier to request a near-clone from competitor LG — or LG saw the Access and felt compelled to provide a clone of its own volition. Either way, the CB630 Invision is getting to the AT&T Mobile TV fight a little late, because we're actually hearing that the Access is already scheduled for an official sunset (not Sunset) on August 24, along with the Sony Ericsson Z750, Samsung SLM, and the Mobile TV-less version of the LG Vu, the CU915. We're also hearing that it'll launch on August 13 for $99.99 on contract with a $50 rebate, so getcha popcorn ready, people.

Last year Nokia invested in the navigation sector by purchasing the Berlin based navigation software compamy Gate5. Although not one of the 'High Street' names the Gate5 smart2go software has been included in a lot of OEM PND systems.

The buy-out of Gate5 indicated that Nokia was taking a very serious attitude to navigation. As the Nokia devices are the World's most prolific handhelds it bodes well for navigation in general.

Also with one of the main manufacturers of handsets entering a market sector where data costs can be an issue it remains to be seen if the network providers start to come up with some well thought out unlimited roaming packages for data.

The announcement made by Nokia yesterday allows users with compatible devices to download free software and mapping.

Additional Content

Another mechanism for funding the free application is charging for other additional content. Currently apart from the turn by turn navigation smart2go provide City Guides. From the looks of the screenshots they have deals with a number of reputable companies providing a good selection of guides.

Conclusion

Nokia seem to have entered the SatNav market with an explosion. The coverage that is being offered in terms of navigable mapping far exceeds any other single company's offering. smart2go's claim of overall mapping (my interpretation of 'in which countries can I use smart2go) is incredible and includes many countries in Africa and Oceania that I have never considered before.

As this has the Nokia brand and marketing backing it cannot fail to be a success, but my only concern is about the pricing model. Hopefully I can investigate this next week at 3GSM.

Moconews reports that Ringtones are often dismissed as last year's technology, but they're still one of (if not the) most lucrative forms of mobile content. That's borne out by recent news from Jamba that it will spend $100 million on advertising this year, according to Mobile Entertainment, which does a good job at checking up on the industry. Although declining as a proportion of Jamba's sales ringtone sales are still increasing in absolute terms, and realtone comprise 40 percent of an average month's downloads on Jamster. There was a serious shake-out in the direct-to-consumer industry, but it resulted in consolidation of the industry rather than the end of it. A lot of that is because of strong growth in developing markets, but top D2C players have other things to offer. "Javier Perez Dolset, CEO of Zed, says: "In five years between 40 and 50 per cent of people will access the net from a mobile device. So companies like Zed will have an advantage. Remember, we have agreements with more than 130 operators and we know how to make portals or apps work across hundreds of devices." Buongiorno (BIT: BNG) is looking at using content as a reward for topping up prepaid cards with the idea that it reduces churn.

Well there is quite a many recent news or Sony Ericsson that i will post today.

Sony Ericsson is trying hard to gain the market share it lost in first quarters by gaining five percentage points in UK market share in recent weeks on the back of the launch of the C902 on contract, and the W350i and W380i on prepay.

Also rumours are that It seems that Sony Ericsson will release some of their new handsets very soon including the white c and the gold Sony Ericsson W890

Sony Ericsson maintained a 25 per cent UK market share for the fourth week running last week as the global business reported a massive 97 per cent slump in its Q2 earnings and threatened to axe 2,000 staff.

Sony Ericsson will be launching more accessories in the near future. Not surprisingly most of them are designed for the upcoming Xperia X1 superphone

Sony Ericsson is looking to cut €300 million (£236.7m) per year in costs. It is unclear if jobs will go in the UK, but Sony Ericsson UK and Ireland managing director John Harber (pictured) said: "No one escapes the microscope.

Jelena Jankovic and Ana Ivanovic, Serbia's best tennis stars, are the first two players to qualify for the 2008 Sony Ericsson Championships. The prestigious season-ending tournament will take place at the Khalifa International Tennis Complex in Doha, Qatar, from November 4-9, 2008.

Those that know me are aware of my addiction to World of Warcraft. There have been talks at Blizzard about creating a mobile version of the game, likely as some sort of add-on rather than a full-fledged version. Naturally, the iPhone would be the perfect platform for such a title, however, with a recent merger, it's possible that this project may never see the light of day.

Recently Activision and Blizzard merged to form Blizzard Activision, which is now one of the largest gaming companies in the world. Unfortunately in the process, one of the smaller companies was virtually eliminated. Vivendi (the smaller company) happens to have their own mobile gaming division, which was most likely to be the one working on the mobile WoW title.

While Blizzard never confirmed that they were indeed going to make a mobile version of WoW, it seems that this recent merger may very well destroy any chance that it had. I still have my hopes up for an application that will allow me to buy and sell my goods on the auction house, and perhaps even chat with my guild mates via the iPhone. Perhaps we'll hear something at Blizzcon later this year.

Parents who fear giving their teens or younger children a "credit card with an antenna" are getting some help from carriers who are introducing services that help parents control their child's cellphone use. The NYT has a detailed story on the various plans available, including T-Mobile's new "Family Allowances," plan launched today, similar to AT&T's "Smart Limits" offering. Verizon ( NYSE: VZ), too, has one in the works, leaving Sprint ( NYSE: S) as the only major carrier without one. For a monthly fee, the services allow parents to cap the number of minutes and text messages, block certain phone numbers, and even limit the time of day when the phone can call out. T-Mobile's plan has an introductory price of $2 a month, while AT&T's cost $5. But the NYT points out that AT&T's has more features, and more flexibility.

So, what's behind the introduction of these plans? According to Yankee Analyst Jill Aldort, it's only the very old and the very young who don't have phones. The plans are a way to ease parents' anxieties over cellphone bill "sticker shock," even if they don't actually set any limits. Apparently, a recent Nielsen survey showed that most parents with cellphone toting 8-12 year olds don't bother with parental controls. ( Release).

LG Electronics and Dolby Laboratories, Inc announced that LG will be the first cell phone manufacturer to include Dolby Mobile into future handsets. Are we to understand that LG is preparing for a whole new multimedia and music cell phone lines in the near future?

With Dolby Mobile, LG will have that cutting edge audio they were looking for. Dolby Mobile has been optimized for mobile applications and it will certainly play its part really well. It’s up to LG to offer great cell phones to take advantage of all that audio technology.

Dr. Skott Ahn, President and CEO of LG Electronics Mobile Communications Company said:

Being the first company to incorporate Dolby Mobile technology into handsets for the global market reinforces LG’s role as a leader in the mobile industry and in multimedia phones. We believe this technology will raise the bar for audio quality on multimedia phones and expect Dolby Mobile to help us create a new trend in the mobile phone industry. LG is committed to providing our customers with the best features available and our new collaboration with Dolby helps us deliver on this pledge.

Bill Jasper, President and Chief Executive Officer, Dolby Laboratories said:

LG shares our passion for cutting-edge innovation. This agreement combines LG’s vision and resources with Dolby’s pioneering leadership in entertainment technology to deliver the next generation of mobile entertainment. Our broad experience and success working with LG in the past gives us great confidence as we move forward.

Well, sure when people start to make official statements everything sounds neat and pretty. We’re anxious to see the first actual phone to pack Dolby technology. And here’s what LG wants to bring in from Dolby:

  • Mobile Surround, which delivers a realistic surround sound experience using headphones
  • Sound Space Expander, which creates a wide, rich, and spacious soundstage experience especially suited to music playback
  • Natural Bass, which adds powerful boost and bass extension
  • High-Frequency Enhancer, which enhances music and other content by restoring high-frequency effects
  • Graphic EQ, which helps tune the audio experience for different content types
  • Sound Level Control, which helps level out audio for a more consistent playback volume
  • Mono-to-Stereo Converter, which improves the playback experience of user-generated content

According to both parties involved, LG will launch high-end multimedia phones in the fourth quarter of this year. That means we’ll have some fun Christmas shopping to do.

So, we figure one of two things has happened here: either the Samsung Access has been a solid seller for AT&T, leading the carrier to request a near-clone from competitor LG — or LG saw the Access and felt compelled to provide a clone of its own volition. Either way, the CB630 Invision is getting to the AT&T Mobile TV fight a little late, because we’re actually hearing that the Access is already scheduled for an official sunset (not Sunset) on August 24, along with the Sony Ericsson Z750, Samsung SLM, and the Mobile TV-less version of the LG Vu, the CU915. We’re also hearing that it’ll launch on August 13 for $99.99 on contract with a $50 rebate, so getcha popcorn ready, people.

Last year Nokia invested in the navigation sector by purchasing the Berlin based navigation software compamy Gate5. Although not one of the ‘High Street’ names the Gate5 smart2go software has been included in a lot of OEM PND systems.

The buy-out of Gate5 indicated that Nokia was taking a very serious attitude to navigation. As the Nokia devices are the World’s most prolific handhelds it bodes well for navigation in general.

The coverage that is being offered in terms of navigable mapping far exceeds any other single company’s offering. smart2go’s claim of overall mapping (my interpretation of ‘in which countries can I use smart2go) is incredible and includes many countries in Africa and Oceania that I have never considered before.

As this has the Nokia brand and marketing backing it cannot fail to be a success, but my only concern is about the pricing model. Hopefully I can investigate this next week at 3GSM.
